The Team
Located on the breezy eastern end of Lake Ontario, Kingston is well-known for being the freshwater sailing capital of the world. It’s no surprise that Queen’s is a sailing powerhouse and home to the most competitive collegiate sailing team in the country.
Collegiate Sailing
We race as part of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association in the highly competitive Middle Atlantic district (MAISA) against major sailing schools such as Georgetown, Hobart/William Smith, Princeton, St. Mary's and the US Naval Academy.
Collegiate-style dinghy sailing is very different from standard dinghy fleet racing. We do most of our sailing in pared-down, non-technical double-handed boats—Club 420s for the most part—that are provided by the host school. Courses are extremely short, conditions highly varied, and fleets extremely close, making for some very demanding sailing. Collegiate racing at the elite level puts a premium on perfect boat-handling and flawless tactics, which is perhaps why so many American and Canadian Olympic sailors come out of the college circuit. Just have a look at the 2008 Beijing rosters!
In addition to double-handed dinghy sailing, the Queen's Sailing Team offers great opportunities to participate in collegiate Laser racing, team racing and keelboat racing as well.
